Opportunities Abound for Donors to Help Cultivate Student Well-Being

The University of Pittsburgh is a world-class university with talented students deserving the best experiences inside and outside the classroom. To ensure that, Pitt is investing in a transformational Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) encompassing all aspects of well-being.

We need your support to ensure all students have access to recreation and wellness programs and services that will enhance their Pitt experience and prepare them for success today, tomorrow, and beyond.

Carla Panzella“College is a time of learning and excitement. It is also a time of growth and self-exploration. Along with supporting our students’ educational needs, we also must provide for their holistic physical, social, and mental health needs. The new Recreation and Wellness Center is the hub for all of these services and will become the beating heart of our community.”

Carla Panzella, Vice Provost for Student Affairs

Creating an Ethos of Health

Individually, physical health, mental health, and strong community connections are important aspects of life. When combined, the resulting holistic well-being is far greater than the sum of its parts. The form and function of the Center intentionally work to seamlessly weave together all aspects of health and well-being to create students ready for the rigors of higher education and prepared for the next phase of their personal and professional lives.

Mental Health

Supporting a student’s emotional, spiritual, and social health while in school carries them well beyond graduation. Positive mental health leads to improved classroom performance, better physical health, and stronger community connections. The Center will provide increased opportunities to meet students where they are and increase accessibility to our services.

Community & Connection

The Center is intentionally designed to bridge the upper and lower campuses and serve as the connection point for students commuting to classrooms and labs. It will also provide a common ground where they can gather. Students drawn to the Center for a specific activity or appointment will find themselves exposed to the panoply of offerings available.

Physical Health

The Center will offer traditional exercise and fitness options along with spaces and equipment to support newer pursuits such as a multi-story climbing wall. Classes, leagues, and other programming will activate these spaces and draw students to participate in activities that promote healthy lifestyles. Studies show physically active students do better in the classroom and have a better overall sense of well-being.
